Multilevel Societies in Birds

نویسندگان

چکیده

There is growing interest in the study of multilevel societies, where social units comprising several individual animals (human and non-human) come together to form higher-level groupings. Grueter et al. [ 1. C.C. Multilevel organisation animal sociality. Trends Ecol. Evol. 2020; 9: 834-847 Abstract Full Text PDF Scopus (46) Google Scholar ] provided a useful definition highlighting that key characteristics societies should include stability across different levels, be driven by active preferences rather than attraction same resource or spatial overlap. Despite their framework being predominately focused on mammals, particular primates, we argue it applies much wider range taxa. Here, highlight important contribution studies birds can make distinguish evolutionary pathways lead mechanisms might maintain these.

Multilevel animal societies can emerge from cultural transmission

Multilevel societies, containing hierarchically nested social levels, are remarkable social structures whose origins are unclear. The social relationships of sperm whales are organized in a multilevel society with an upper level composed of clans of individuals communicating using similar patterns of clicks (codas). Using agent-based models informed by an 18-year empirical study, we show that c...

Satellite telemetry and social modeling offer new insights into the origin of primate multilevel societies

Multilevel societies (MLS), in which polygynous reproductive units are nested in a larger social matrix, represent a highly complex social system documented only in a small number of mammalian species. Using long-term behavioural data, satellite telemetry and social network analysis, we present a new framework for understanding the function and social dynamics of the golden snub-nosed monkey ML...

Multilevel processes and cultural adaptation: Examples from past and present small-scale societies

2. The last two decades have seen a proliferation of research frameworks that emphasise the importance 3. of understanding adaptive processes that happen at different levels. We contribute to this growing 4. body of literature by exploring how cultural (mal)adaptive dynamics relate to multilevel 5. social-ecological processes occurring at different scales, where the lower levels combine into ne...

Male cooperation for breeding opportunities contributes to the evolution of multilevel societies

A small number of primate species including snub-nosed monkeys (colobines), geladas (papionins) and humans live in multilevel societies (MLSs), in which multiple one-male polygamous units (OMUs) coexist to form a band, and non-breeding males associate in bachelor groups. Phylogenetic reconstructions indicate that the papionin MLS appears to have evolved through internal fissioning of large mixe...

Multilevel processes and cultural adaptation: Examples from past and present small-scale societies.

Cultural adaptation has become central in the context of accelerated global change with authors increasingly acknowledging the importance of understanding multilevel processes that operate as adaptation takes place. We explore the importance of multilevel processes in explaining cultural adaptation by describing how processes leading to cultural (mis)adaptation are linked through a complex nest...
